About the Program
Underwear!
Imagine all the things children might answer to the question “If you could receive anything you want, what would it be?”
A class of 4th graders in a school ANA works with were asked that question and answered “Underwear!”
Hands down underwear is the most needed item and constantly requested by school staff ... ironically it is the most expensive to purchase.
Frankly when families have to choose between underwear and food, food wins.

There are so few jobs on the reservation, that more than half of the region’s adults are unemployed, which makes it nearly impossible to buy simple necessities like clothing and winter coats. Even if families had the money, few nearby stores sell affordable clothes—the nearest Walmart in Gallup, NM, could be hours away. As a result, some children have only one set of clothes to wear to school. With more than 30% of the children coming from homes with no running water or electricity, elementary schools often launder the children’s clothes while they attend class in borrowed sweat suits.
To change that, ANA has established wonderful relationships with school staff and administrators, who work closely with the children.
Throughout the year, ANA and volunteer shoppers purchase brand NEW clothing, coats and shoes at discounted prices.
When schools make us aware of a need, ANA sends each child all-new items including a winter coat, several shirts and sweatshirts,
two pairs of pants as well as socks, underwear, and shoes in their specific sizes.
It may seem like a small thing, but new clothing quickly instills optimism, enthusiasm, and an improved self-image. In turn, this increased self-esteem makes students more likely to learn and participate in classroom discussions and be successful in school.
