About the Program
Kids can’t understand what they can’t see. It's hard to learn when you can't see a chalkboard or struggle to focus on the letters in a book.
Because many families can’t afford to purchase eyeglasses for their children,
Each fall, ANA nurse and non-professional volunteers join with student nurses at University of New Mexico-Gallup to perform health screenings for students on the Navajo and Zuni Reservations. In partnership with the Lions Club's Kidsight Program and the Ophthalmology Department doctors at the University of New Mexico, students receive the Lion's vision screening and then eye exams and prescriptions from the doctors. The students who need glasses then choose their glasses and receive two free pair from the Lion's Club.
ANA also pays the cost of no-frill frames and lenses through the Zuni Optical Center. ANA also extends the program to Zuni adults who can’t afford eyeglasses.
With improved vision comes improved learning and comprehension.
